Gillespie, Thomas
(1708–74)
   Denomination Founder.
   Gillespie was minister of Carnock, Fife, Scotland. He was a friend of Jonathan edwards. He was deposed from his parish by the Church of Scotland General Assembly in 1752 because he refused to take part in a forced settlement. He was supported by his congregation and in 1761, with two other ministers, he founded the Relief denomination.
   This was notable for its support of foreign missions and for offering Communion to all Christian believers. In 1847 the Relief joined with the United Secession Church (originally founded by Ebenezer erskine) to form the United Presbyterian Church of Scotland. Later, in 1900, the United Presbyterians joined with the Free Church of Scotland to make up the United Free Church of Scotland.
